During the festival of Adonis members of the cult of Aphrodite mourned her deceased lover, creating what became known as Adonis Gardens. Terracotta pots filled with seeds were placed on rooftops, where they sprouted quickly and left to wither away under the punishing sun. A symbol of frivolity and how powerless we are over the forces of life.
