Custom Case Study: Alterations, Made to Order and Customizations, All For One closet!

We do alterations and create custom clothes for people on a regular basis, and it’s always an honor, but we recently had an especially epic time making seven pieces for a new customer — an atelier’s dream come true. Marya (whose last name happens to be Hudson!) found our Hudson shop while visiting the Hudson Valley and was thrilled to learn that we could sew her whatever she liked in our Catskill factory, tailored to her measurements and in her choice of fabrics — and we’d preserve the resulting patterns for easy reorders. And all at off-the-rack prices! The order she wound up placing happens to illustrate pretty much all the different categories of custom work we do, so we wanted to share this set of examples with you.

There aren’t necessarily bright lines between the categories, as you’ll see, but this is how we think about talk about our services —

ALTERATIONS

Marya fell in love with an MXH Chore Dress we had on the rack, in a vintage Pucci-style print (from our Regina Collection), but it happened to be sleeveless and needed a little bit of a fit adjustment. We took measurements for the alteration, and we also had a sufficient remnant of the fabric that we were able to add the flutter sleeves to it. We now have a pattern for a custom-fitted, made-to-order Chore Dress for her, and she also had us make a second one in a deadstock fabric we had on hand, a soft blue with white embroidered floral pattern.

MADE TO ORDER

Any of our Made X Hudson designs can be made to order in your size and fabric choice, and this is the most straightforward category. Marya bought a couple of our MXH Chore Jackets off the rack in her size and then chose custom fabrics for a couple more — one a vintage kimono fabric and the other an amazing black deadstock fabric with allover couching-stitch embroidery. Piece of cake!

Our most popular styles all have Made to Order listings where you can initiate an order, or simply contact us (there’s a form at that link) about what you’d like and we’ll get the ball rolling.

CUSTOMIZED MADE TO ORDER

Another dress that caught Marya’s eye was our bestselling MXH Zero-Waste Dress in a deadstock ropes-and-tassels print on black silk that was in the wrong size, but we had more of the fabric. (It has since sold out.) She loved the style of the dress but wanted more coverage on the torso and arms, so Sergio created a version of the dress, to her measurements, that he’d had in mind — with side panels and squared flutter sleeves, and in the fabric she wanted. We’re so happy with the outcome that we’ll be making this design a regular option for others. (We’ve already made more for Marya!)

FULLY CUSTOM

You can see Marya really likes the flutter sleeve — it’s such a nice, soft look — and she had in mind some other tweaks to the Chore Dress. So we wound up developing a custom pattern for this additional dress, with a slightly different shape and a longer flutter sleeve. And she had us make that for her in two deadstock fabrics: a Missoni-style zig-zag knit and a beige brocade.

As we mentioned, Marya is so happy with all of the above that we’ve since sewn and shipped a few more dresses to her, using her customized patterns. And we’d love to do the same for you! Let us know what you’re dreaming of, and we’ll do our best to make it come true — either for a single garment or recurring wardrobe updates or anything in between.
