Class Overview

Are you ready to finally learn how to sew or level up your fundamentals? This five-week Intro to Sewing course is designed to build confidence at the machine while guiding you through the complete construction of a handmade patchwork satchel.

Classes meet Monday nights 5:30 - 7:30pm from February 23 through March 23 (10 total hours). In our Catskill factory, students will learn the fundamentals of sewing, including cutting and measuring, piecing, construction, lining, and topstitching.

  • Class 1: Learn your sewing machine and practice sewing
  • Class 2-3: Focus on creating patchwork fabric through piecing
  • Class 4: Bring the bag together
  • Class 5: Bonus class to work on a bag or other skills

By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a finished Patchwork Satchel and the skills to confidently piece projects together on your own. The Patchwork Satchel is mixed fabric tall tote with a square bottom (approx. 22" tall x 17" wide), bronze tone snap closure on the interior, a fold over detail, and a reinforced double sided single strap (36" x 2"). This bag features a fully lined interior with an optional interior pocket.

You'll learn how to set up and how to use a sewing machine with skills like best uses for sewing needles, thread and tension. Skills like how to seam, patterning a bag, the correct way to iron, constructing and piecing together different fabric types, how to clean finish edges, setting snaps, inset lining, constructing pockets and the order of operations that will make your sewing project a success in the future.
